Diwali is a special occasion for us. As we step into the Diwali season, I build my vegetarian Diwali menu around my son’s allergies, so every dish has to earn its place. Like every year, I keep my list short and intentional: 4 sweets, 4 snacks, and one simple but enjoyable meal. It isn’t about making everything. It’s about making the right things and celebrating the joy of life together.
Our family are descendants of India, but over the generations our taste buds have adapted to Caribbean-style cooking. So you’ll find traditional Diwali favorites on my table, each with a little twist of my own. I planned this menu around my family’s requests, so every dish is one we truly look forward to.
Everything here is vegetarian and egg-free, and free of onion and garlic, in keeping with everything on My Kitchen My Home.
Why Keep a Limited Diwali Menu?
When you’re cooking around allergies, a smaller menu is a smarter menu. A short list means:
Less stress, so you can enjoy the day instead of living in the kitchen
Better control over ingredients and cross-contact
More meaning, because every dish is a family favorite
Easier prep, since you can plan, shop and cook in stages
The 4 Diwali Sweets
1. Rice Pudding (Kheer)
Creamy, gently spiced with cardamom, cinnamon and vanilla. This is always my first sweet.
2. Gulab Jamun
Soft, syrup-soaked dumplings that are a must at any Diwali table.
3. Gojia
A pastry dough filled with sweet coconut and folded into a crisp little parcel, a favorite in Caribbean Diwali kitchens.
4. Vermicelli Cake
A fragrant, sweet vermicelli dessert that rounds out the sweet table.
The 4 Diwali Snacks
1. Eggplant in Split Pea Batter
Slices of eggplant dipped in a seasoned split pea batter and fried until golden and crisp.
2. Sehena
Urad dhal rolled in spinach, a traditional Indo-Caribbean snack that is soft inside with a lovely herby bite.
3. Potato Balls
Seasoned, golden potato bites that are easy to love and easy to serve.
4. Paneer Kachouri
Crisp, flaky kachouri filled with paneer, perfect with chutney.
The Simple Diwali Meal
Simple doesn’t mean small. This meal is comforting, balanced, and full
of flavor:
Split pea soup, warm and hearty
String beans with potatoes, a homestyle everyday favorite
Jackfruit in coconut milk, rich and satisfying, a great meaty-textured
vegetarian dish
Rice, to hold everything together
Paneer in butter with chickpeas, creamy and filling
Dhal puri, flatbread stuffed with spiced split peas
Spiced rice, for a little extra fragrance
Chutney, to brighten every bite
Tips for Planning a Stress-Free Diwali Menu
Start with the sweets. Many can be made a day ahead.
Prep snack batters and fillings in advance so frying is quick.
Choose a few dishes you can cook while others rest, like soup, rice and curries.
Read every label when cooking around allergies, since brands vary.
Let your family choose. Their requests make the day more personal.
A Note on Cooking With Allergies
Every family’s needs are different. Check ingredient labels carefully and adjust each recipe to what is safe for your household. Where nuts or other garnishes are optional, feel free to skip them.
